At 72, Jean-Louis Gasset will no longer be on the bench for a team. The French coach passed away this Friday, as announced by his former Montpellier club on its X account: “The MHSC learned today with immense sadness the passing of Jean-Louis Gasset. Son of Bernard Gasset, one of the founding members of the Pailladin club alongside President Louis Nicollin, Jean-Louis successively was a player, educator, then head coach of the first team on three occasions, the last from October 2024 to April 2025. A son of the club, he left his mark on all those who crossed his path with his professionalism, his kindness and his thirst for transmission. He was also a formidable emblem of Montpellier’s training that he exported to major clubs, whether at Paris Saint-Germain, Espanyol Barcelona, AS Saint-Étienne or Olympique de Marseille and in the France team where he was an assistant to the coach, Laurent Blanc. Today, the Montpellier club has lost one of its emblematic figures. Our sadness is immense when we recall his smile, his inimitable voice and his sharp sense of the formula. The President Laurent Nicollin and the whole club would like to extend their sincerest condolences to Jean-Louis Gasset’s family, notably his son Robin, currently deputy to Zoumana Camara at the head of the club’s first team, his daughter Coralie, his mother Eliane and the entire Gasset family”, a écrit le MHSC sur ses réseaux sociaux.

A great loss for France, which paid a heartfelt tribute to the illustrious deceased. Captain of the Blues, Kylian Mbappé also paid a tribute to the former Ivory Coast coach. “An encyclopedia of football has left us. Thank you for everything and rest in peace. My condolences to his family and loved ones”, wrote the Real Madrid forward on his Instagram account after resharing Ligue 1’s post.
