Kenya: Mudavadi warns diplomats ahead of the 2027 elections

During a diplomatic briefing in Nairobi on September 10, Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi stated that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) must be allowed to carry out its mandate independently and professionally. The executive branch claims it aims to ensure a safe, free, and peaceful election.

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that the government is enhancing coordination among public agencies to identify threats ahead of the vote. Individuals who threaten peace or security will be held accountable for their actions under the law, regardless of their political affiliation, according to the ministry.

The daily newspaper The Star reports that Mudavadi also urged countries planning to deploy electoral observers to begin their accreditation processes well in advance. The Kenyan official emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules and institutions responsible for organizing the election.

The issue of the IEBC’s independence is already a significant topic in the Kenyan political debate. Several officials from the ruling coalition have recently called on parties to refrain from exerting pressure on the commission, while foreign missions have engaged in discussions with the institution regarding electoral governance and election observation.

Public broadcaster KBC notes that authorities also plan to protect citizens, electoral institutions, and critical infrastructure during the election period. The general vote is scheduled for August 10, 2027.
