In Kenya, four days of free care to treat obstetric fistula in Voi

Obstetric fistula is an abnormal opening between the genital tract and the bladder or rectum, most often resulting from prolonged and obstructed labor without timely obstetric care. It can lead to persistent urinary or fecal incontinence. The UNFPA emphasizes that it is largely preventable and that surgical repair can address many cases.

In Kenya, the United Nations agency estimates that there are over 3,000 new cases each year. Less than half of the affected women have access to the necessary surgery, primarily due to cost, stigma, and a lack of specialized services in certain rural areas.

The Voi camp will also provide care for perineal tears related to childbirth. The severity of these injuries varies, necessitating an assessment by a healthcare professional before determining the appropriate treatment. Organizers have announced that specialized care will be offered free of charge throughout the duration of the camp.

This initiative comes as Kenya accelerates its national Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere program for 2026-2028. The Ministry of Health announced in early September a budget of 12.5 billion Kenyan shillings for maternal and neonatal health interventions, along with the recruitment of 5,000 nurses and midwives to improve access to care and referral systems.

Women in Taita Taveta affected by fistula or childbirth-related injuries are encouraged to visit the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi. The camp is scheduled to run from September 16 to 19, 2026.
