Ghana: Mahama swears in three new Supreme Court judges

The new members of the highest court are Sophia Rosetta Odokuwaa Bernasko-Essah, Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson Jr. The ceremony took place at Jubilee House, attended by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

John Dramani Mahama urged the three judges to make the Constitution their primary reference, especially in cases that may provoke significant political tensions or public pressure. He also advocated for the independence of the judiciary as a guarantee for citizens.

Sophia Rosetta Odokuwaa Bernasko-Essah and Edward Amoako Asante previously served on the Court of Appeal. Anthony Forson Jr. worked in the private sector and previously chaired the Ghana Bar Association.Ghana. Edward Amoako Asante also led the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

On behalf of the three new judges, Sophia Rosetta Odokuwaa Bernasko-Essah pledged to apply the law impartially and courageously. She described the judicial role as a public responsibility that requires decisions based on the law rather than personal preferences.

The Ghana Judicial Service reports that the three judges took oaths of allegiance, judicial office, and secrecy before receiving their letters of appointment and signing the official register.
