The Nigeria head coach, Éric Chelle, did not hide his enthusiasm for the Africa Cup of Nations, which he now regards as being at a level higher than many European leagues. A strong statement delivered on Friday at a press conference, on the eve of a decisive match for the Super Eagles.

Former Mali coach, the Franco-Malian technician emphasised the need for African football to build its own identity. “We must believe in ourselves. For me, this CAN is better than European championships. It’s an exceptional competition”, he said, also calling for increased training of African coaches to reach international standards.

Éric Chelle also called for greater rigor in the governance of football on the continent, arguing that African potential deserves management equal to its talents. In sporting terms, a victory over Tunisia this Saturday would allow Nigeria to seize the top of their group and secure their ticket to the knockout stage. The Super Eagles will notably rely on Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams. In their opening match against Tanzania, Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman had found the back of the net, while Osimhen had been less successful despite several clear chances.
