Diplomacy: Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expected in Cotonou on Tuesday

This trip, according to information from Fraternité, is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen bilateral relations between Dakar and Cotonou, against a backdrop of reshaping diplomatic balances in West Africa.

Since his inauguration last April, President Faye has made multiple visits to his West African counterparts. However, the absence of Benin from his initial agenda raised questions and comments among the diplomatic community, some seeing it as a less-than-committed signal toward Senegalese-Beninese relations.

This first visit to Cotonou thus fills this symbolic gap and marks a turning point in the cooperation between the two states. According to the media, the discussions planned between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his counterpart Patrice Talon will focus on several strategic areas: regional security, economic integration, energy cooperation, and the fight against violent extremism.

This diplomatic rapprochement comes in a sub-regional context marked by political tensions, increasing security challenges, and a rise in pan-African movements.

Benin and Senegal, often perceived as bastions of democratic stability, have a role to play in the rebuilding of West African solidarity.
