CRIET: 5 years imprisonment confirmed on appeal for a teacher prosecuted for sexual harassment of a minor student

The events took place in Cotonou, in the Littoral department. The teacher, identified by the initials A. N., worked at the school attended by the victim.

Assigned to a CM1 class, he also occasionally supervised a CM2 class in the absence of its regular teacher. It was in this context that he approached the adolescent, making repeated advances followed by repeated touching that severely affected the young student’s schooling and peace of mind.

At first instance, on June 5, 2025, the court sentenced the teacher to five years of firm imprisonment, accompanied by a fine of one million CFA francs as well as a symbolic one franc in damages awarded to the National Institute for Women (INF), which had joined as a civil party.

The decision also included a ban on practicing the teaching profession for three years starting from the end of his main sentence.

Having appealed, the accused saw the CRIET chamber confirm all the initial sanctions. Through its column “The echoes of CRIET,” the National Institute for Women welcomed this decision, emphasizing the full and entire responsibility of adults regarding violence against minors.
