After a goalless first half, Dortmund took the lead in the 53rd minute with an own goal by Renato Veiga. Villarreal responded in the 66th minute thanks to Santiago Mouriño, who scored the equalizer with a header.

Serhou Guirassy then turned the match around. The Guinean striker scored two goals in the final minutes, including one from a penalty, to allow Borussia to pull ahead.
