Back on the continental scene, the Beninese national team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Atlas Lions (28-52) on Wednesday, in their opening match of the tournament.
The wake-up call was brutal for the Handball Cheetahs. For their big return to the Africa Cup of Nations, the Beninese were ruthlessly dominated by Morocco, impressive in control and efficiency. The one-sided score (28-52) reflects the gap between a Moroccan side seasoned in continental clashes and a Benin team still finding its bearings at this level.
Nevertheless, the start of the match hinted at good intentions. Willing, committed and applying themselves in bursts, the Cheetahs tried to match them in intensity. But very quickly, the Atlas Lions’ technical superiority, their depth of bench and their tactical discipline made the difference. The Moroccans accelerated the pace, punished the slightest mistake and widened the gap as the minutes ticked by.
However, this heavy defeat does not spell the end for Benin’s ambitions. Starting Thursday, January 22, the Cheetahs will already be back on the court for a second crucial showdown against Congo. A pivotal match, where they will need to quickly correct mistakes, tighten the defense and boost offensive efficiency to pick up the first points in this group stage and restart the momentum.
