Former Nigerian international Ogenyi Onazi is decidedly optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite the climate of doubt surrounding the squad, according to remarks reported by the Daily Post.
After Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the Super Eagles’ run in Morocco raises questions. All the more so because manager Eric Chelle has made bold choices by leaving out several key players, including Maduka Okoye, Terem Moffi and Tolu Arokodare, in favor of new faces such as Salim Fago Lawal, Tochukwu Nnadi and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro.
A bold gamble, but one Onazi considers far from unrealistic. The former Lazio midfielder recalls that recent history supports such a renewal. “In 2013, we also had many new players, and that sowed doubt. We knew the task would be difficult, but we decided to give everything, and we ended up champions,” he told Footy Africa.
Convinced that this group has the talent and mindset required, Onazi believes the Super Eagles have what it takes to clinch a fourth continental triumph and silence the skeptics in Morocco.
