Barça coach Hansi Flick insisted on defending his offensive approach after the spectacular 3-3 draw conceded against Club Bruges on Wednesday night in the Champions League. Faithful to his playing philosophy, the German said he would not give up his principles, despite another worrying defensive display.
At the Jan Breydel Stadium, the Catalans had to chase the score three times, each time victims of balls played in behind a very high defensive line. A recurring fragility, since Barça has now gone nine matches without a clean sheet in all competitions.
« We want to play according to our DNA. We’re not here to defend deep and win 1-0 », Flick said at a press conference. « Coming back to equalize every time is positive, but we must be more consistent in midfield and better manage transitions. »
Under pressure after this latest slip-up, the blaugrana coach knows he will have to quickly find the balance between spectacle and efficiency, or risk seeing Barça compromise its European ambitions.
