Two individuals were arrested and a staggering sum of 25,420,000 CFA francs in counterfeit banknotes was seized, mostly in 10,000-franc denominations.

The case began with a tip considered reliable. According to information gathered, a man living in Porto-Novo was actively seeking a buyer for a large batch of counterfeit banknotes.

The officers from the Agongointo district police station then set up an undercover operation. A police officer posed as a potential buyer, established contact, and managed to set up a meeting for the transaction.

The chosen venue was the inn Le Perchoir, located in the Zougoudo district. The two suspects arrived there by motorcycle, brand Dayang, with the merchandise. As soon as the counterfeit banknotes were displayed, the authorities, led by the unit chief, intervened and arrested them, without incident.

The ensuing search revealed the scale of the trafficking. In a satchel, police found 25 bundles of one million CFA francs each, made up entirely of 10,000-franc notes, along with an additional 42 notes of the same denomination.

The inventory conducted at the police station, in the suspects’ presence, confirmed the total amount seized: 25,420,000 CFA francs in counterfeit money, ready to be injected into the economy.

The two individuals have been placed in custody at the Agongointo police station. They will face charges in court for manufacturing, possession, and attempting to put counterfeit notes into circulation.
