Benin: two LD party officials sentenced to 2 years in prison

Departmental party officials in Mono, the two men had been detained for their alleged involvement in the falsification of proxy documents used to obtain duplicates of tax clearance certificates, documents essential for filing candidacies for the municipal elections.

According to the special prosecutor of the CRIET, the investigation was opened after a complaint from the Direction générale des Impôts. The DGI reported forged proxy documents made out in the names of people who had never requested a duplicate of their tax clearance certificate.

At the time of the events, the spokesperson of the party Les Démocrates, Guy MITOKPE, had denied these accusations, saying the political party did not identify with the acts attributed to its activists.
