Benin: FBF president Mathurin de Chacus announces his departure
The president of the Benin Football Federation (FBF), Mathurin de Chacus, announced this Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in Missérété, that he will not seek a new term at the head of the national football governing body.
Mathurin de Chacus announces his departure from the FBF presidency. The announcement, made during the FBF’s ordinary and extraordinary general assemblies, puts an end to persistent rumors of a possible extension of his term.
“Many are pushing me to change the rules so I can continue, but I tell them I am tired,” Mathurin de Chacus told delegates without hesitation.
A statement that sounds like a clear intention to turn the page after several years at the helm. While reaffirming his decision, he was careful to clarify his position on the succession.
“I have said it several times, I have no candidate, but I will stand behind whoever best answers the demands of the position and is capable of continuing what we have all built together,” he insisted.
The withdrawal of Mathurin de Chacus, considered a central figure in the recent development of the national game, comes ahead of the FBF’s statutory elections, expected in the coming months, opening the way to an open contest in which several figures from Beninese football could position themselves to take over.
