Benin: The government celebrates artisan excellence during JAB 2026

Organized by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion, responsible for vocational training, through the Chamber of Trades of Benin (CMA-Benin), the ceremony was presided over by Minister Awaou BACO. The president of the Economic and Social Council, Conrad Gbaguidi, as well as several government members, ministerial advisors, and other dignitaries were also in attendance.

Under the theme “Beninese artisans: committed and competitive,” this edition highlighted the know-how, innovation, and contribution of artisans to the national economy. The authorities aim to make craftsmanship a lever for job creation, skill development, and the enhancement of Benin’s heritage.

Three Categories of Distinction

In the “Commitment” category, Afiavi Honorine Tossa won the first prize, worth 3 million CFA francs and a trophy. Sewa Etienne Dekpey received the second prize, accompanied by a reward of 2 million CFA francs and a trophy.

The “Meritorious Artisan with Disabilities” award was given to Fidèle Kandi-Sounon, who received 3 million CFA francs and a trophy. Franck Adomalinkpo, ranked second, obtained 2 million CFA francs and a trophy.

In the “Artisanal Innovation Award” category, Christine Mintri took the first prize, also worth 3 million CFA francs and a trophy. Leila Kinlodon received the second prize, together with 2 million CFA francs and a trophy.

In total, the six main distinctions represent 15 million CFA francs in financial rewards, excluding trophies.

The president of CMA-Benin, Soufiyanou Imorou, stated that the recognized artisans embody “a story of courage,” as well as the efforts of families and the training of apprentices. He emphasized their contribution to building the national economy.

The ceremony also honored eleven winners of the Craft Quiz. Each received an envelope of 500,000 CFA francs, totaling 5.5 million CFA francs.

This initiative particularly aims to better highlight the crafts sector, generate interest among young people, and enhance the visibility of a sector that encompasses many production and service activities.

Addressing the artisans, Minister Awaou Bacо called on them to continue their efforts in terms of innovation, training, and skills transfer. She also mentioned integrity, discipline, professionalism, and the commitment to quality work as key factors for the sector’s competitiveness.
