On the night of Tuesday, December 9 to Wednesday, December 10, 2025, a patrol from the Illara border police station, in the municipality of Kétou, seized seventy packages of Indian hemp following a nighttime chase.
Around 1:00 a.m., officers spotted a motorcyclist carrying a large package in the Illèchi neighborhood, very close to the border. At the sight of the police, the man abandoned his motorcycle and fled on foot into the nearby bush, leaving the vehicle and the suspicious package behind.
The motorcycle and the package were taken to the station for inspection. When the package was opened, officers discovered seventy carefully wrapped packages of Indian hemp, confirming the shipment’s illicit nature.
The border police station immediately opened an investigation to identify the fugitive and determine whether any accomplices are involved in this drug trafficking. Authorities are calling on the people of Illara and surrounding communities to cooperate by providing any useful information to help locate the suspect or storage sites linked to this trafficking.
This seizure is part of the ongoing efforts by Beninese law enforcement to combat drug trafficking, particularly in sensitive border areas where traffickers exploit secondary routes to move their products.
