Benin: Ban on Makeshift Constructions Along the Route des Pêches

The Route des Pêches, a showcase of Benin’s tourism potential, is entering a new phase of preservation and modernization. Chaired by President Patrice Talon, the Council of Ministers formally announced the ban on precarious constructions on this strategic site.

This decision is part of ongoing urban modernization efforts, particularly in the cities of Greater Nokoué, where major investments are being made to boost economic and tourism appeal. “The touristic vocation of the Route des Pêches is becoming increasingly evident,” the Council noted, stressing the need for strict regulation of developments in the area.

Social measures to support affected households

The government has set December 31, 2025, as the deadline for dismantling all precarious constructions identified in the zone. Landowners and parcel holders are urged to comply with the measure, with potential enforcement actions for non-compliance.

Mindful of the social impact of such a decision, the authorities have also announced support for vulnerable households. Occupants unable to secure housing after demolition will benefit from specific state assistance for resettlement.

Through this measure, the government aims to balance modernization imperatives with social concerns, while reinforcing the Route des Pêches as a genuine tourism and economic hub for the country.
