East Africa: 49 million people facing hunger

According to the regional organization, Sudanremains the epicenter of one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the region. Conflicts beyond the Horn of Africa are also impacting ports, fuel prices, grain markets, and aid budgets.

Workneh Gebeyehu also cautioned that the upcoming El Niño season requires preparations ahead of rising waters. IGAD aims to strengthen anticipation mechanisms, which are already operational in four of its seven member states.

The meeting in Djibouti brings together foreign ministers and representatives from member states to discuss security crises, humanitarian needs, and institutional reforms. Sudan is participating again as a full member after resuming its involvement in the organization in February.

Despite the humanitarian pressure, IGAD asserts that 77% of its priorities were on track in the first half of 2026. Its regional universal health coverage index has increased from 60 to 65, with a target of 70 by 2027.

The executive secretary urged member states to stabilize the organization’s essential operations, gradually clear their arrears, and establish a more sustainable funding framework.
