Benin – Hounvi Case: Steve Amoussou’s First Statements After His Release from Prison

The Beninese cyberactivist Steve Amoussou publicly spoke this Thursday, August 20, 2026, on the airwaves of Bip Radio, confirming his effective release early in the morning.

Speaking on air at 7:10 AM, he shared his very first words following his release from prison: “Around 6:30, I was already a free citizen. I’m in good health; it’s a blessing.” He confided.

This statement puts to rest expectations and confirms the conclusion of the process related to his two-year prison sentence imposed and upheld by the Court for the Repression of Economic Offences and Terrorism (CRIET).

A definitive end to a landmark judicial case

Incarcerated since August 20, 2024, after his arrest in Lomé and subsequent presentation to the special prosecutor at CRIET, Steve Amoussou faced charges for harassment via electronic communication, spreading false news, and incitement to rebellion.

The Beninese judiciary presented him as the individual hiding under the pseudonym “Frère Hounvi,” known for his highly critical political commentaries against the government of President Patrice Talon.

Now released from all criminal constraints after serving his entire prison sentence, Steve Amoussou reenters civilian life, claiming to be in good physical condition.
