Benin: classified forests of the Kouffè and Wari Maro mountains transformed into a national park

The Beninese government has decided to reclassify the classified forests of Monts Kouffè and Wari Maro as a new national park.

A feasibility study confirmed that this vast forest complex is “still well preserved” and that it has notable richness in both plant and animal species, justifying its upgrade to national park status.

The government also highlighted the support of local communities, traditional leaders and local authorities for the project, a key element to strengthen participatory management.

The classified forest of Monts Kouffè spans the departments of Donga, Borgou and Collines, covering approximately 272,804 ha.

The classified forest of Wari Maro covers approximately 102,130 ha in the departments of Donga and Borgou.

The Council of Ministers instructed the minister in charge of Sustainable Development “to ensure its prompt implementation.” The decree establishing the park must be implemented quickly.

The creation of this national park is part of a national conservation strategy aimed at creating a coherent network of protected areas across the territory. It aims to curb forest degradation, support biodiversity and pave the way for ecotourism opportunities and sustainable local development.
