Benin: ban on any profane or heretical remarks targeting Vodun, its rites and its expressions

Firmly, the CRVB expresses its “deep bitterness” over publications that harm the image, sanctity, and dignity of the common heritage that is Vodun. According to the committee, this religion constitutes an intangible cultural heritage of inestimable value, inherited from ancestors and globally recognized as an identity and spiritual foundation of many Beninese communities.

The statement, signed by the president of the CRVB, Professor Mahougnon Kakpo, formally prohibits any dissemination of profane or heretical remarks targeting Vodun, its rites, and its expressions. The committee insists that these impious behaviors will no longer go unpunished.

Sanctions announced against the perpetrators

In its declaration, the CRVB warns that concrete measures, both traditional and judicial, will be taken against offenders. They face sanctions in accordance with endogenous customs and the laws in force in the Republic of Benin.

“Vodun is our culture, a religion on the same footing as all others. A sacred, intangible heritage that is culturally protected, which no one has the right to profane with impunity,” the statement recalls.

With this solemn warning, the Vodun Rites Committee of Benin intends to protect this essential part of the national cultural identity and preserve the respect due to traditions.
