Attempted coup in Benin: the Parti Les Démocrates condemns and calls for peace
Benin went through a morning of high tension on Sunday, December 7, 2025, when a group of men in uniform briefly seized the national television station to announce the dissolution of institutions and political parties.

This attempted takeover by force was quickly contained by the defence and security forces, restoring order in the capital.
In the aftermath, the Parti Les Démocrates issued a statement in which it unequivocally condemned the mutineers’ initiative. The party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and rejected any form of access to power outside legal channels.
Les Démocrates welcome the prompt response of the defence and security forces, which allowed a rapid return to calm and reassured the population.
The party also expresses its solidarity with all those affected by the day’s events.
In its message, the political formation calls on citizens to favor dialogue in resolving political and social disputes. It stresses the need to promote peace and preserve national cohesion.
The party finally urges the authorities to work toward an immediate and lasting normalization of the situation in order to maintain the country’s stability, with major electoral deadlines just months away.
