African Union: Corinne Amori Brunet in Luanda to strengthen peace and security mechanisms.

These high-level meetings brought together member states of the African Union (AU) on August 29th and 30th, 2026, during the 26th extraordinary session of the Executive Council (on August 29th) and the 21st extraordinary session of the AU Conference (on August 30th).

The discussions focused on improving tools for preventing and managing crises, in light of the ongoing armed conflicts, political crises, terrorism, and violent extremism that threaten the stability of several nations.

The President of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, emphasized the complexity of the security environment and the increasing tensions between states. In the face of these challenges, the continental organization aims to improve its early warning systems, strengthen the implementation of its decisions, and secure sustainable funding for its peacekeeping operations.

This participation by Benin is of strategic importance: in September 2026, the country is preparing to assume the monthly presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC).

Elected to this body for the period 2026-2028, Benin will lead the work and agenda of the organization, playing a leading role in coordinating diplomatic and security efforts in Africa.
