AFCON 2025: Asamoah Gyan names three favorite countries to win the trophy
As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations approaches, scheduled for December in Morocco, former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan has revealed his favorites to succeed Ivory Coast. For him, three nations clearly stand out: Nigeria, Ivory Coast and the host country, Morocco.

Present Wednesday evening at the CAF Awards in Rabat, the former captain of the Black Stars did not hide his disappointment at Ghana’s elimination, absent from the continental event. “It’s a hard blow for us, but we qualified for the World Cup, which is some consolation,” he told CAFonline.
Gyan also relied on recent performances to draw up his list of contenders. He notably praised Nigeria’s run at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, where the Super Eagles lost in the final to the host nation (2-1). “Nigeria were outstanding and came close to the title over the past two years. Ivory Coast also showed great solidity,” he recalled.
Regarding Morocco, host of the next edition, Gyan believes the Atlas Lions have strong arguments to go all the way: “Morocco is a natural contender, the team is solid and will be playing at home.” The former Ghanaian No. 3 therefore places the three nations at the top of the list to lift the trophy in December: “For me, the favorites are Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco.”
