Tensions have risen between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria amid a controversy over qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The DRC strongly reacted to an initiative by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), accusing the Super Eagles of trying to qualify « by underhanded means ».
As a reminder, the Leopards secured their spot in the African playoffs by beating Nigeria after a thrilling final decided on penalties (4-3), last month in Rabat. A defeat apparently hard to swallow for the Nigerian camp.
Shortly after, the NFF took the matter to the competent authorities by filing a petition aiming to have the DRC disqualified, accusing it of fielding allegedly ineligible players during that decisive match. A move that prompted an immediate and forceful reaction from the Congolese side.
On its official X account, the Congolese federation didn’t mince its words : « If you can’t win on the field, don’t try to win through the back door. » Before adding : « The World Cup should be played with dignity and confidence, not through legal maneuvers. Let the show begin! »
