According to information gathered, the party leadership led by Thomas Boni Yayi plans to pursue every legal avenue to challenge its exclusion from the electoral process.
A move which, according to several internal sources, comes with a strategic choice: to prioritize dialogue with the current authorities in order to avoid political escalation just months before the general elections.
This dual legal and political approach reflects the party’s desire to remain within the republican framework while keeping institutional pressure.
« Les Démocrates remain committed to republican legality and social peace. We’ll assert our rights to the end, but always in respect of the laws and the institutions », a source close to the party leadership said.
As a reminder, the Constitutional Court, in its decision handed down this Thursday, dismissed its jurisdiction to rule on MP Abdel Kamar Ouassagari’s petition, which contested an order from the Court of First Instance of Cotonou concerning the sponsorship of MP Michel Sodjinou. That order, by annulling the sponsorship in question, had deprived the party of a decisive support needed to reach the legal threshold of 28 sponsorships required to present a candidate for the presidency.
