Sudan: BRICS call for immediate and permanent ceasefire
BRICS leaders called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Sudan on Sunday, September 13, in New Delhi, as part of a declaration issued at the conclusion of their 18th summit, in response to the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation.
The New Delhi declaration expresses deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and the risk of rising extremism and terrorism. The statement urges a peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue.
The group members also demand sustainable, urgent, and unhindered humanitarian access for the Sudanese population, as well as increased aid to Sudan and neighboring countries hosting displaced persons.
The BRICS reaffirm the principle of African solutions to African problems and call for better coordination of various mediation initiatives. South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia are among the African members of the group.
This position comes amid a series of diplomatic consultations regarding the war. On September 12, British envoy Richard Crowder called for an end to the fighting and the opening of an inclusive dialogue following a meeting with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Khartoum.
The conflict has pitted the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, against the Rapid Support Forces of Mohamed Hamdan Daglo since April 2023. Additionally, the UN Security Council extended the arms embargo on Darfur for one month on September 11.
