South Africa: Técnicas Reunidas to design one million-ton green ammonia plant

The engineering design contract, known as FEED, was announced during the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. It pertains to the future production unit located in the Coega special economic zone, near the Ngqura port in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Hive Hydrogen South Africa estimates the projected investment for the green ammonia production plant at $1.8 billion. The scope assigned to Técnicas Reunidas includes the electrolyzers for hydrogen production, air separation units, the ammonia synthesis loop, a desalination facility, and storage capacity exceeding 100,000 tons.

Pipelines connecting the unit to the Ngqura port, as well as several auxiliary facilities, are also included in the studies. The renewable electricity required for the project falls under a separate undertaking and is not included in this design contract.

Upon completion of the studies, Técnicas Reunidas may retain the contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the production unit. The awarding of the EPC contract remains subject to technical and commercial results, permits, financing, and a final investment decision, which had not yet been made as of September 16.
