Senegal: Wheat imports nearing one million tons

The figures are included in the annual report on foreign trade published by ANSD on July 30, 2026. They confirm Senegal’s growing importance in the West African wheat market, alongside Nigeria and Ghana.

The increase in imports is explained by the demand from households and processing industries. Wheat is mainly used in the production of flour, bread, baked goods, and other processed foods.

The development of industrial capacities also strengthens the needs for external supply. Since Senegal does not produce enough wheat to meet its demand, operators in the sector remain dependent on purchases from international markets.

Nearly a million tons imported
