While her presence had been eagerly anticipated, Kate Middleton had to resign herself to canceling her appearance at the opening of the prestigious Royal Ascot 2025. The news, confirmed by Kensington Palace and reported by The Mirror, reflects a cautious decision related to her health.

In remission since last January following cancer treatment, the Princess of Wales continues a measured return to her public engagements.

Prince William’s wife, who had made numerous appearances in recent weeks — the May 8th commemorations, Trooping the Colour on June 14, the Order of the Garter ceremony on June 16 — appears to be taking a necessary pause. This temporary withdrawal, announced just hours before the event, shows the caution she is exercising to protect her recovery.

“The princess would be disappointed not to attend the famous social and sporting event in Berkshire with her husband, the King and Queen,” British media report.

She had nonetheless been listed on the official programme, with her participation in the carriage procession planned alongside Prince William.

A carefully managed return

While the decision to withdraw from Royal Ascot disappointed many monarchy fans, it fits within a medical and personal logic. “She is showing good sense, listening to her body, and gradually resuming her public engagements,” said Ailsa Anderson, former spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth II, to People magazine.

Since publicly announcing her illness last year, the 43-year-old princess has adopted a more flexible pace. Outside her official duties, she finds refuge with her family in the quiet landscapes of Norfolk or the Lake District.

A message of resilience

Kate Middleton’s last appearance at Royal Ascot dates back to 2023. The following year, her health did not allow her to attend, just after her diagnosis. While her absence in 2025 still reflects caution, it also carries a message of resilience and self-respect in the face of hardship.

Prince William, for his part, handled the event’s engagements alone. Despite her absence, the Princess of Wales remains very much present in the hearts of the British public, who praise her courage in facing her illness.
