Real Madrid: Mourinho reveals why Rodri preferred Barça
While Rodri was announced as one of Real Madrid’s priorities, the Spanish midfielder ultimately chose to join FC Barcelona. José Mourinho revealed that he spoke with the player and believes that his hesitations contributed to the failure of his arrival in Madrid.

The transfer of Rodri to FC Barcelona continues to make waves in the Spanish capital. Long associated with Real Madrid after his departure from Manchester City, the Spanish international ultimately opted for the great Catalan rival. José Mourinho, now at the helm of the merengue club, shared his version of events during an appearance on the Spanish show El Chiringuito. The Portuguese coach acknowledged that he had discussed several times with Rodri during the negotiations. According to him, the player was not entirely convinced about joining Real Madrid. “I spoke with Rodri a few times. Real Madrid made him a very good offer. But he had doubts,” Mourinho explained.
The Madrid coach believes that this uncertainty eventually weighed on the issue. “I think Rodri’s doubts gave me doubts,” he added. However, Mourinho does not question the qualities of the Spanish midfielder, whom he considers to be “an extraordinary player.” But for the Portuguese, wearing the Real Madrid jersey requires total conviction. “Real Madrid is such a prestigious club that we cannot afford to have players who hesitate,” he concluded. Rodri ultimately chose Barça, thus providing Real Madrid’s eternal rival with a top-notch reinforcement.
