Pretoria: new postponement of the extradition trial of Kemi Seba
The activist Kémi Séba was unable to appear before the South African court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The hearing, which was notably regarding the extradition request issued against him by the Beninese government, has been postponed to September 23, 2026.
According to information reported by BIP Radio, this postponement is due to a technical issue at the correctional facility where the defendant is being held.
A general power outage, caused by severe weather conditions, prevented prison officials from carrying out the extraction procedure from his cell and ensuring his transfer to the courthouse.
Crossover Judicial Procedures in South Africa and Benin
Incarcerated in South Africa since April 13, 2026, Kémi Séba is facing dual proceedings:
Locally: The South African justice system is prosecuting him for attempted illegal exit from the territory to Zimbabwe, in possession of non-compliant documents.
Internationally: The Beninese state has submitted a formal extradition request against him. The Beninese authorities are pursuing him for “apology of crimes against state security” and “incitement to rebellion.”
All parties will have to wait for the judicial appointment on September 23 to resume the examination of this case.
