Nigeria: 13 killed, passengers targeted in Plateau
At least 13 people were killed on Sunday evening, September 13, in several separate attacks in Jos South, Mangu, and Riyom, located in Plateau State, central Nigeria. Nine victims were traveling towards Jos when a vehicle was targeted in Dungus, according to initial reports gathered on the ground.
The attack in Dungus occurred around 9:40 pm. Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for Berom Youth Moulders, stated that armed men opened fire on the vehicle. Several injured individuals were taken to the hospital, and a member of Operation Rainbow, the state-supported security initiative, was among those killed.
In the Mangu area, two people were killed in Vodni, within the Pushit district, and four others were injured by gunfire. Additionally, two more individuals were killed in Tahoos, located in the Riyom area, according to reports released on Monday.
The Plateau State Police Commissioner, Ayo Faniyan, confirmed that attacks had taken place and indicated that his services were still gathering information before issuing a detailed statement. Different casualty figures circulated in the early hours, particularly regarding the vehicle attack in Dungus.
The state government condemned the violence and urged residents to refrain from any retaliatory actions. In a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, authorities confirmed attacks in Mangu on September 12, as well as a deadly incident at Dungus Junction in Kuru on September 13.
Authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and promptly report any useful information to security services. Security personnel have been deployed to the affected sectors of Mangu and Kuru, according to the state government.
