Niger: Attack in Sakoira Claims the Lives of 12 Soldiers
Twelve Nigerien soldiers were killed in a terrorist ambush in the Tillabéry region, the Nigerien army announced. A sweeping operation has been launched to track down the attackers.

The attack occurred on Friday, April 25, 2025, when a unit on mission under Operation Almahaou was ambushed approximately ten kilometers north of Sakoira, in the Tillabéry region. According to the General Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces, the assailants had hidden among civilian camps before launching a surprise assault on the patrol.
In response, the soldiers fought back valiantly until reinforcements, both aerial and ground, arrived, forcing the attackers to retreat northward. A large-scale pursuit operation has been deployed, utilizing air and ground forces to hunt down those responsible for the assault. “During these intense clashes, 12 of our soldiers gave their lives defending the nation, honor, and freedom,” the army stated in a communiqué.
Meanwhile, Nigerien authorities extended their condolences to the families of the victims, praising the “courage, professionalism, and determination” of the defense and security forces. They also emphasized that the military continues to carry out its mission with honor and patriotism in the face of a ruthless enemy.
As part of the sweep operation, two individuals suspected of involvement in the attack were apprehended while attempting to hide on a hillside. They have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
