Modern markets in Benin: free period ends in July, giving way to fees
After a year of operating free of charge, the modern markets of Cotonou will enter a new phase starting from July 2025.

Traders established in these infrastructures will now have to pay a daily fee of 600 CFA francs.
The announcement was made by Eunice Loisel wife Kinnifo, director of the National Agency for Market Management (ANaGeM), during an intervention on TVC channel. Her remarks, echoed by several media outlets, clarified that this measure targets the recently modernized urban markets in the economic capital.
The fee will apply exclusively to vendors active in the modern markets of Cotonou. Traders operating outside this city, especially butchers and fishmongers located in rural areas, are not yet affected. Details on the specific application conditions should be provided in the coming days.
This measure thus marks the end of the transitional period of free occupation granted to occupants since the markets’ opening. It aligns with a sustainable and autonomous management approach for modernized commercial infrastructures funded by public money.
