Mississippi: man arrested in investigation into Tasia Fortune’s death

Police Chief RaShall Brackney identified the suspect as Jarques Ratliff and stated that he had been arrested for murder following the execution of search and arrest warrants. This announcement comes a day after the state medical examiner concluded that Tasia Fortune’s death was a homicide.

According to authorities, the man in custody knew the victim. However, the exact nature of their relationship has not been specified. Court records reviewed on Friday by several U.S. media outlets did not indicate whether the suspect had appeared before a judge or if he was represented by an attorney.

The police have not disclosed any motive or evidence suggesting that the crime was racially motivated. The police chief urged against speculation regarding the circumstances while the investigation is ongoing. Tasia Fortune, a mother of four, had been reported missing prior to the discovery of her body.

Jarques Ratliff is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Investigators continue to consider the case active and do not rule out the possibility of additional arrests.
