Kenya: One dead and six vehicles torched during UDA meeting in Embu

In a statement, the National Police Service indicated that a group had attempted to forcibly enter the meeting, prompting police intervention to secure the site. Several individuals were arrested, and Kithure Kindiki was evacuated unharmed, authorities reported.

Regional police commander Stephen Chebet confirmed that several other vehicles were vandalized and that police officers sustained injuries during the clashes. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the violence and to identify those involved.

The meeting gathered UDA polling station officials from various constituencies within Embu County. Kithure Kindiki stated that he had met with over 15,000 local party officials to review the implementation of the 2022 agenda and to prepare for the next phase of grassroots organization.

The tensions arise as Kenyan parties strengthen their structures ahead of the general elections in 2027. Competition is also intensifying within the opposition, where discussions are already underway regarding the timeline for selecting a common candidate to face President William Ruto.

The National Police Service announced that those arrested would be interrogated as part of the investigation, and that additional suspects may be sought. The police specified that further information would be provided as the investigation progresses.
