Kenya: Equity Group’s net profit rises by 32% in the first half of 2026.

Equity Group published on Wednesday, August 19, a net profit of 45.52 billion Kenyan shillings for the first half of 2026, up 32% year-on-year. The banking group had reported a profit of 34.63 billion shillings in the first six months of 2025.

Profit before tax rose by 39%, to 57.75 billion shillings, compared to 41.54 billion a year earlier, according to the unaudited financial statements. Earnings per share increased from 8.83 to 11.61 shillings.

Total revenue increased by 25%, reaching 124.87 billion shillings. Net interest income hit 69.28 billion, up 17%, while non-interest income grew by 36%, to 55.59 billion, now representing 44.5% of the group’s revenues.

The balance sheet stood at 2,155.55 billion shillings on June 30, marking a 20% year-on-year growth. Customer deposits rose by 21%, to 1,589.42 billion, and net loans increased by 19%, to 981.04 billion.

Regional Subsidiaries Strengthen Their Contribution

Subsidiaries located outside Kenya provided 42% of profitability and 47% of banking revenue, according to the group’s statement. They also account for 51% of deposits, 54% of loans, and 52% of banking assets.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equity BCDC’s net profit increased by 30%, to 11.8 billion shillings. Equity Tanzania recorded an 82% increase, to 2 billion, and Equity Rwanda saw a 12% rise, to 2.9 billion. In Kenya, the bank’s net profit grew by 32%, to 25.7 billion shillings.

The quality of the loan portfolio improved during the period. The non-performing loan ratio decreased from 13.7% to 9.5%, while the coverage ratio increased from 68% to 70%. The cost-to-income ratio fell from 51.7% to 48.6%.

Finally, Equity Group states that 98.3% of transactions are now conducted outside of branches and 89.7% through digital channels. Shareholders’ equity increased by 27%, to 350.36 billion shillings, with a return on assets of 4.5% and a return on equity of 26.5%.
