The Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has stated that a potential political career would not put an end to his artistic journey. During a recent livestream with Davrel, the singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, explained that he would continue to perform on stage even if one day he were to hold government positions.

The artist notably drew on the example of former Haitian president Michel Martelly, himself a musician before taking office. “If one day I decide to enter the government, I will continue to make music. I don’t think that changes anything.”, Davido said. “Obviously, it may not be at the same pace as before. Michel Martelly was a musician when he was president of Haiti and he continued to perform. He even went on tour during his presidential vacations.

The Nigerian artist behind several African hits, however, acknowledged that his interest in politics had cooled considerably over the years. According to him, the experience of many Nigerian celebrities who moved from the world of entertainment to the political sphere did not prove conclusive. Davido thus confessed that he had once considered a political career, before becoming more skeptical about the realities on the ground and the difficulties of the Nigerian political system.
