AFCON 2028: Ethiopia submits bid to host the tournament

Ethiopia is laying out its ambitions to host the next major celebration of African football. The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has officially announced its bid to stage the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations. In a statement published across its communication channels, the body says it has taken another step in putting together its file. The bid is supported by the Ethiopian government, backing presented as essential to the country’s desire to host the prestigious continental tournament.

The federation says it has submitted its official bid in line with the requirements set for hosting the tournament. It also says the country is ready to take on the logistical and infrastructure challenge such an event requires. After hosting several continental competitions in the past, Ethiopia now wants to move up a level by staging the AFCON. The bid will now have to be examined by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before the host country is chosen.

Through this move, Addis Ababa wants to put Ethiopian football back at the centre of continental attention and use AFCON to strengthen its sporting appeal. The process is expected to be competitive, however, with several African nations also able to seek the right to host the 2028 edition.
