Benin: Who is Nestor Dako, discreet confidant of Boni Yayi, who passed away in Europe?

Benin is in mourning. While the country was vibrating to the rhythm of the August 1 celebrations, the news fell like an axe. Nestor Dako is no more. The former Keeper of the Seals passed away abroad, far from Beninese soil. The circumstances of his death have not yet been made public.

A magistrate by training, Nestor Dako left his mark on Benin’s judicial and governmental spheres. His career began within the judiciary, before reaching its peak with his appointment as advocate general at the Supreme Court.

A loyalist of Boni Yayi, promoted to several strategic posts

When the “regime of change” came to power in 2006, Nestor Dako was chosen by President Boni Yayi to serve as director of the civilian cabinet of the presidency. He would hold that role only briefly before being elevated, in May 2007, to Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice, in charge of relations with institutions and government spokesperson.

His appointment was formalized by decree n°2007-226 of May 31, 2007, which also granted him the powers of acting head of government during a trip by President Boni Yayi to Abuja. He thus became, for a brief period, one of the most powerful men in the Beninese executive.

A discreet but decisive man of influence

After his time in government, Nestor Dako continued his involvement in public administration through strategic roles, notably as an advisor to the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARCEP). A respected but discreet figure, he had somewhat withdrawn from the political scene in recent years.

His death, which occurred in a European country, raises questions about the final years of his life. Voluntary exile or necessity? Details about his recent situation remain, for now, unknown.
