Benin: new practical training for young people in construction, energy, and digital technology
For the 2026-2027 school year, Benin will introduce new vocational training pathways in its Technical Professional High Schools. These programs, leading to the Technician’s Diploma in Trades (DTM), cover areas such as electricity, renewable energies, digital skills, automotive maintenance, and construction trades.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, responsible for technical training, announced this initiative on August 18, 2026, in Cotonou. The measure is particularly aimed at young people and parents of students, but the announcement does not yet specify the schools involved, admission requirements, or the enrollment schedule.
The new training programs aim to develop skills that are directly applicable in several technical sectors. They are designed to prepare learners for installation, maintenance, diagnostics, and project execution according to their chosen specialties.
Training in Electricity, Energy, and Digital Skills
The program dedicated to electricity trades prepares students for the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in residential, tertiary, and industrial settings. It also includes solar installations and home automation equipment.
Graduates will be able to work as installers, electrical maintenance technicians, photovoltaic solar system installers, home automation technicians, or team leaders. The training may also lead to the creation of a company specializing in electrical installations.
Another pathway is focused on renewable energies. It covers the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of photovoltaic and thermal solar systems, as well as associated equipment. Career opportunities include roles such as installers and maintainers of solar systems, solar energy technicians, or technicians in energy maintenance.
The ministry is also planning a training program in refrigeration and air conditioning. Learners will be trained in the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of domestic, commercial, and industrial refrigeration equipment. The curriculum also encompasses air conditioning, plumbing, water heating, and ventilation.
This specialty will particularly lead to careers as refrigeration technicians, air conditioning installers and maintainers, plumbing and sanitary installation technicians, or ventilation technicians.
Electronic maintenance, with a multimedia focus, will cover audio, video, computer, and telephony equipment. Learners will need to be able to install, configure, maintain, diagnose, and troubleshoot these devices.
Career paths include audiovisual technician, multimedia equipment technician, IT and network technician, telephony technician, electronic equipment repairer, and assistant in digital services.
The pathway for network and IT security technicians will focus on the design, installation, configuration, and administration of professional networks. It will also address system security, data protection, and maintenance of digital infrastructures.
Graduates will be able to work as network technicians or administrators, systems and network technicians, IT support technicians, cybersecurity assistants, or network installers.
Multiple Specialties Focused on Automotive and Construction
Training in passenger vehicle maintenance will prepare learners for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing the mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems of vehicles. The program includes the use of appropriate diagnostic tools while adhering to safety standards and technological developments in the automotive sector.
Career opportunities include roles such as automotive mechanic, maintenance or diagnostic technician for vehicles, automotive electrical and electronic technician, workshop manager, and technical advisor. The training may also lead to managing or founding a garage.
In the field of construction and public works, the pathway for structural work will focus on the construction, renovation, and rehabilitation of buildings. It will include reading plans, site layout, foundation work, masonry, reinforced concrete, and basics of site supervision.
Graduates can become masons, team leaders in structural work, skilled construction workers, site technicians, or construction assistants. They may also venture into the construction and public works sector.
The training for surveyor-topographer technicians will focus on topographic surveys, preparing plans and maps, setting out works, and land demarcation operations. It will utilize modern measuring instruments and geolocation technologies.
This specialty prepares students for roles as surveyor-topographer technicians, assistant surveyors, topographic operators, cartography technicians, or land technicians. Graduates may also join surveying firms, construction companies, engineering offices, or public services.
Finally, the pathway for building study technicians will focus on the technical and economic studies necessary for the design and execution of projects. Instruction will include computer-aided design, reading and understanding plans, measurement, cost estimation, and preparing technical documents.
Announced key career opportunities include building study technician, estimator, designer-drafter, study office technician, construction assistant, and technician responsible for estimating or supervising works.
Through these new offerings, the Benin government aims to strengthen young people’s access to practical skills in sectors deemed necessary for the labor market. The announcement invites interested parties to consult the official document for further information.
