Banikoara fire: death toll rises from one to five

Four more people, who had been evacuated to hospital services in Parakou due to the severity of their burns, have died.

The news was confirmed on Monday, 24 August 2026, by Orou Osseni, communal president of the fuel vendors’ association, and relayed by local media outlet Fraternité FM.

Five dead, and hospitalised victims on the road to stabilisation

These four new deaths add to an initial case recorded on Friday, 21 August, bringing the provisional toll to five dead. As for the injured being treated on site in Banikoara, the clinical picture is more reassuring: victims whose condition is not considered critical are beginning to regain consciousness and interact with medical staff.

In terms of material damage, the losses recorded in the affected room include the destruction of around thirty bags of maize and numerous containers of adulterated fuel.

Growing awareness and stronger safety measures

Given the severity of the incident, players in the smuggled fuel trade have launched urgent talks with local authorities. A working session was held between the mayor of Banikoara, vendors and importers.

The meeting resulted in a strong commitment: to work closely with fire service and civil protection teams to run information campaigns among resellers. The priorities set out aim to strictly regulate fuel offloading, modernise storage conditions and, above all, require that these hazardous depots be kept well away from residential areas and homes.
