Attempted coup in Benin: government reassures, situation under control

While reports spoke of the beginning of an uprising aimed at overthrowing President Patrice Talon, the government quickly reacted to reassure the population.

In a solemn statement on national television, Interior Minister Alassane Seïdou said that “the country is entirely under control,” thanks to the swift response and the loyalty of the defense and security forces that remained faithful to their republican oath.

The Télévision du Bénin, briefly disrupted by the coup plotters, is now secured by regular units, which have retaken command.

In several neighborhoods of Cotonou, an increased security presence was observed, with thoroughfares temporarily blocked and systematic checks carried out by the Republican Guard to secure sensitive areas.

The Interior Minister urged people to remain calm and go about their business peacefully, assuring that national stability has not been compromised.
