Amina Orfi becomes world No. 1 in squash at 19, setting a record

Orfi defeated her compatriot 3-2 in the final, after a match lasting 107 minutes. This victory ended El Hammamy’s eleven-month reign at the top of the world rankings and secured Orfi her first Platinum title.

At 19 years and two months, Amina Orfi surpasses the previous record held since 1984 by New Zealander Susan Devoy, who became world No. 1 at 20 years and two months. The new leader of the women’s rankings continues an already historic season.

In May, Orfi had already made history by becoming the youngest women’s world squash champion at 18 years and ten months after defeating Nour El Sherbini in five games during the final held in Giza. She also became the first player to hold both the junior and senior world titles simultaneously.

Squash will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
