The suspended bridge, located between Mirepoix-sur-Tarn and Bessières, collapsed around 7:00 GMT. According to media reports, a 15-year-old girl was killed with another person in the accident.
The collapse of the bridge caused further damage in addition to the deaths of two people. According to an AFP report, a small vehicle and a truck sank into the river as a result of the collapse. The truck driver died as a result of the fall of his vehicle and it is reported that his body is still in the truck. Five other people were injured, including two rescuers. This accident mobilized at least 60 first aiders and 40 police officers who came to the scene to try to find possible missing persons.
The mayor of Mirepoix-sur-Tarn, Eric Oget, told AFP that the accident was a “real trauma” and that users and people going to schools used the bridge daily. He also indicates that trucks were not allowed to use the bridge before its collapse. French investigators are studying the cause of the accident. The bridge was last inspected in 2017 and revealed “no structural problems”, according to the Haute-Garonne County Council.
