In the afternoon of Saturday, 16 November 2019, the Ambassador of Nigeria to Benin was summoned by the Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MFAC) to explain the latest incidents in some border areas between the two countries. In response to the Beninese government’s anger, Ambassador Emmanuel Kayode Oguntuase gave Nigeria’s position on what happened.
At the end of the week, the authorities were informed of the incursion into Beninese territory of a group of Nigerians who presented themselves as customs officers. The latter reportedly broke into shops owned by Beninese people to take bags of rice with them. These incidents that took place in the border areas of Pobè and Igolo are not to the liking of the Beninese government, which expressed its anger at the Nigerian Ambassador.
Following the strong protest from the Beninese side, the Nigerian Ambassador to Benin did not remain without reaction. “We condemn any act that could create tensions or disputes between the two countries,” he told ORTB. According to Emmanuel Kayode Oguntuase, Nigeria will not remain idle in the face of these reprehensible acts. “We are currently trying to identify those responsible for these acts in the Pobè region. The results of the investigation that is currently underway will be known shortly,” he promised
