The interim president of Algeria dismissed Major General Cherif Zerrad, head of the employment and preparation department of the General Staff of the National People’s Army, from his post.
In a presidential decree dated 13th October, Abdelkader Bensalah dismissed Major General Cherif Zerrad from his post. The news was made public with the publication of issue 65 of the Official Journal. He was replaced by Major General Mohamed Bachar in this key position in the army. However, the presidential decree did not mention the reasons for this dismissal.
Algeria has been shaken since February by a vast “Hirak” protest movement that forced former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign. Several of his relatives are being prosecuted for embezzlement. The presidential election scheduled for 12th December is largely rejected by the street, which demands the departure from the system and the renewal of the political class.
