Paul Kagame’s country opens the doors of the african digital revolution. In fact, the very first 100% african smartphone production plant of the Mara Group company has opened its doors in Kigali. 

From now on, 100% made in Africa smartphones will be manufactured in Rwanda by Mara Group, a pan-African technology company that inaugurated, on tuesday 7th october the first 100% african smartphone production plant in Kigali. This company intends to produce 1,200 smartphones per day, all components of which will be 100% designed in Rwanda. Note that two models are already on the market. These are the Mara X with a 5.5-inch display and the Mara Z with a more powerful processor and a 5.7-inch HD display.

According to RFI, version X costs 173 euros (112,450 F Cfa) and version Z costs the equivalent of 118 euros (76,700 F Cfa).

“We manufacture the motherboards, we manufacture the subboards throughout the process. There are more than a thousand parts per phone. The MaraPhone is a real brand from the continent that corresponds to the uses of African mobile users,” said CEO Ashish Thakkar, quoted by RFI, at the inauguration of the plant.

For the Rwandan government, this initiative aims to improve digital services.
