In a statement dated wednesday 9th october 2019, russian President Vladimir Putin called on his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan to “think carefully” before launching an offensive against Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

Turkey announced on Wednesday the start of an offensive called “Source of Peace” in north-eastern Syria. According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, this action aims to eliminate a “terrorist corridor” in southern Turkey against what he calls “the Kurdish militia of the People’s Protection Units (YPG)”, which he considers a “terrorist” group but which is supported by Western countries.

According to Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a telephone conversation on Wednesday just before the start of the Turkish military offensive in Syria. He stressed “the importance of guaranteeing Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, as well as respect for its sovereignty”.

The Kremlin statement states that: “Putin called on his Turkish partners to think carefully about the situation in order to avoid undermining joint efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis.

The EU’s response….

For its part, the EU is threatening Turkey and demanding an end to Turkish offensives in Syria. In addition, an Emergency meeting of the UN Security Council is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 2019 on this Turkish offensive.

Syria condemns the Turkish incursion

Syria condemned on Wednesday the Turkish incursion into the north-eastern part of the war-torn country, controlled by the Kurds, and promised to deal with “Turkish aggression”, state media reports.
